Are you considering self-storage solutions? You'll want to avoid making these mistakes when packing the unit.

Not Organizing Your Belongings

While you may be treating your storage unit like a game of Tetris trying to fit all of the pieces in to maximize your space, you need to put some thought into how you organize the unit. If not, you could end up having to pull everything out in order to get that one thing that you need. It is a good idea to put the large and heavy items near the back of the unit so that you do not have to frequently move them out of the way. Seasonal items that things that you frequently need access to should be put near the front, since you'll be getting those out at least once every year.

Not Creating An Inventory

Don't assume that you can remember everything that you put into a storage unit. While it is easy to just grab things and move them to the unit as you go, there will come a time where things need to be retrieved. That's why it helps to create a simple inventory of what you are putting into storage. If you are looking for something specific and not sure where it is, you can search the inventory and discover if it is in the storage unit or not.

Not Labeling Boxes

Once you know that something is in your storage unit, the next step is actually getting it out. If you have not labeled any boxed when packing your storage unit, you could end up looking for things by having to physically go into each box until you locate it. It will help to label each box so that you know what is inside it. Labeling boxes can be as simple as putting a number on the box, and then listing what is inside it on that inventory. Then all you need to do is locate the numbered box.

Not Using Climate Controls

Think you can save money by not renting a unit with climate controls? The increased humidity and extreme temperatures in a storage unit can actually damage the items in it. For example, a leather couch could dry out and become cracked, items made out of wood could swell, and electronic items can become damaged due to moisture content in the air. Renting a unit with climate controls can be a necessity to protect your belongings.
