When you are temporarily moving out of your own place and in with family, whether due to financial constraints or to help take care of an ailing loved one, you will likely need to put the majority of your possessions into a self storage unit. If you want to make sure all of your possessions come through the process of being stored for a prolonged period of time unscathed and in good, usable condition, there are some steps that you will want to take when moving everything into storage. Get to know some of the ways that you can make the self storage process easier and more successful.

Pack Anything Breakable In Bubble Wrap

While you may not think that you need to use bubble wrap because you will be careful when carrying and transporting your boxes to and from storage, you should never skip out on the bubble wrap when it comes to your breakables. Because your items will be in storage for several weeks or months, they can shift or move inside of the box over time. This can cause damage and could even break your items completely.

Additionally, your boxes themselves could shift while in storage causing a box to possibly fall. Your breakables stand a better chance of making it through intact if you wrap them in bubble wrap. You will also want to fill any open spaces between the items with newspaper or other packing material. This will also prevent shifting and potential breaks.

Wrap All Furniture In Protective Casings

Protecting your fabric furniture is also an important step to take when you will have your possessions in storage for a prolonged period of time. Your couches, recliners, mattresses, and box springs should all be wrapped in protective casings or covers when in storage.

This will ensure that they do not suffer preventable damage that could occur when they are in storage. For example, waterproof plastic or vinyl covers can prevent water damage if there is a flood or leak in your storage unit. Similarly, these covers will keep bugs or other pests that may sneak into even the cleanest and securest of storage facilities from getting into your furniture. With these covers, you will be able to bring your furniture back out of storage in the same great condition as they were when you put them into storage.

Pack Books Carefully

Books are an item that many people think are more durable than they are. As such, they often throw their books into boxes haphazardly and at odd angles. This can cause serious damage to the spines and pages of the books, especially when they stay in those positions for extended periods of time.

Instead of doing this, make sure you lay books down flat in the box. Do not allow them to be bent if they are paperbacks or sit at an angle. You can also place the books in a spine-down position which will also prevent damage. However, if you do so, make sure that they stand up straight and are not able to shift to another angle. As long as you follow these steps, you will have undamaged books when you unpack them again.
